Mr. Chairman,

I think Mr. Williams has satisfied me. I can be swayed by the opinions of others, however.

Mr. Chair--

While on the surface, Mr. Williams is qualified to sit on the court, I must take issue with his nomination in the first place.

Nowhere in our history has a former President of the United States ever been seated on the highest court in the land. The reason is clear: it is unreasonable to expect a person who held the highest political office in the world to suspend their known biases and give the people a fair shake. President Williams is a good and honorable man and he can be a valuable member of the Congress if he so chooses to go in that direction.

However, I cannot support his nomination to the Supreme Court.

I yield.

Mr. Chair,

one always hopes elected officials know at least some basic American political history. President Harding appointed President W.H. Taft as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. So the preceding gentleman is incorrect in saying "Nowhere in our history has a former President of the United States ever been seated on the highest court in the land."

I yield,

Mr Chair

I oppose this nominee because he is a proven quitter. He fled the duties of his job as President and now wants to be rewarded for it on the High court? We need people in positions of power who will stay the course

I Yield

Mr. Chair,

I call on the preceding "gentleman" to apoligize for his statements. Mr. Williams became seriously ill, how can one blame him for resigning?

I yield.
